課程概述

The thriving development of cultural and creative industry (CCI) in Taiwan has seen rising demand for the translation. This course aims to offer practical training in developing students’ awareness of and skills in translating for cultural, creative and exhibitive purposes in both directions (English-Chinese). While aiming at fostering students’ reflective approaches of their own translation process as novice translators, students would be particular encouraged to contemplate the essential styles and characteristics of such text types, including their informative, expressive and operative dimensions; as such, students are required to develop the problem-solving skills in handling the translation challenges encountered in the process. Further to honing the translation skills for such a text type, students are also encouraged to develop and strengthen the revision and editing techniques. Apart from translating practices, students are given the opportunity to critique and compare the existing translations with their own translations, so as to identify the extent to which their translations can be improved and fine-tuned.

課程目標
Students should:
 Be able to familiarise themselves, highlight and handle specific features in such text types at lexical, syntactical, discoursal, textual levels and beyond.
 Be able to develop awareness of vital translation issues in relation to the relevant text types.
 Be able to develop analytical and problem solving skills in handling such text types.

課程要求
 Complete and submit the weekly or fortnightly assignments (translation and revision) for the purpose of peer review and in-class discussion at least THREE days before class (see instructions in class)
 Present their translation commentaries and peer-review in the first part of classes
 Understand that any unjustified absence and late submission of assignments for up to two times will result into a ZERO of the entire assessment
 Not submit any overdue coursework/assignments without any prior discussion/negotiation with the course coordinator; in general, an extension will only be granted for serious circumstances that require compassionate consideration, such as sudden serious illness, loss of family or a car accident
 NOT expect spoon-fed teaching from the lecturer
 Be proactively participating in their own learning process, both in and after class, including (in-class) translation practice, self-critic, peer-review as well as mini presentation on a regular basis
 Be able to work individually on and responsible for their coursework, including paying attention to details when writing assignments and punctual submission of any types, either through e-mail or in hard-copy
 Be good team players when pair/teamwork is required
 Use NTU e-mail as the channel of the first point of contact
 Discuss with the lecturer with regard to their learning process at any time during the semester

*The final version is to be announced at the beginning of the semester.
*The class content schedule may change according to students’ learning needs, learning processes and/or learning speeds.
